I plead with the powerful hourglass,
Complimenting her figure, in hope,
That she will be generous,
And lengthen time’s rope.
A gold band around my finger,
Is of no use to me tonight.
A precious hour will suffice,
To share a kiss by candlelight.
After shunning our bribes,
The sun sets, beckoning,
We part ways,
And await our reckoning.
Time is cruel and heavy with hate,
But love has power to recreate.
In response to dVerse’s Pride Poetry Prompt found here
Very much inspired by Carol Ann Duffy’s Hour.
Nice sonnet, the volta creates a paradox.

A beautiful sonnet inspired by one of my favourite poets. I especially love the opening lines, the powerful hourglass and time’s rope, and the thought of the kiss by candlelight.

It is a lovely sonnet, with such an effortless use of the rhymes. That lengthening of time’s rope is something that many of us can make some use of. 🙂

We can never underestimate the power of love. Children are born knowing only love. It is a monumental sadness that so many are taught to judge and/or hate.

Very true, it’s sad that for some couples that time together is rare.

I love a good sonnet… I should really get back into writing those. I love the subject and maybe I would call it passion more than love.

I do too but prefer to stay away from the syllable counting. Thank you! ✨

When you get used to do it (as I did for a long time) you don’t have to count… you just feel those 5 beats 🙂

Ah yes the rhythm is nice though I think changes to that structure can effectively convey hidden meanings too.

Love never seems to have enough time. The hourglass is very effective. (K)

Thank you 😊 I hope I captured the same themes as Carol Ann Duffy did in her poem, Hour.

The personification of the hourglass brought a smile to my face. Lovely sonnet.

times rope. hourglass. how lovely! Time’s rope has lenghtened too long since I have tried a sonnet, this is wonderful. You have Volta’ed me. And love, making all the rest of it superfluous in its power, just one line, that changes the whole thing. 🙂
